University of Tennessee at Knoxville
A public higher education institution that is big on tradition, the University of Tennessee at Knoxville is a flagship land grant university that was established in 1794 prior to Tennessee being announced as the 16th state of U.S. It is a member of the UT System and is renowned for offering excellent research activities produced by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. It is the only higher education institution that has collections of papers from three U.S. presidents local to Tennessee, namely James Polk, Andrew Jackson, and Andrew Johnson. In 2010, the university began various construction projects with an expenditure of $1 billion. Some of the infrastructures built include the first phase of the Student Union, the Fred D. Brown Jr. Residence Hall. Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, and Fred D. Brown Jr. Residence Hall. In the 2015 fiscal year, the university marked a new record to its fundraising history when it garnered a total of $235 million which is the highest since they started. The fundraising aims to support the improvement of university facilities as well as programs and activities to become one of the Top 25 public research universities in the country.

In 1972, Dr. William Bass established the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility, or known as the "Body Farm." The facility was built to support anthropological and forensic understanding particularly about the human body and its decomposition.
The university has more than 450 registered student organizations that offer various activities enriching arts, social activities, volunteering, politics, and sororities and fraternities. It also has a student-led organization called the Campus Events Board that organizes different programs and events for the students. Activities include concerts, lectures, art exhibitions, and homecoming. |
The University of Tennessee competes in various athletic sports such as football, basketball, and baseball. The women's team has eight championships in NCAA Division I and is presently headed by Holly Warlick. Neyland Stadium is the university's most famous athletic facility. It can house approximately more than 100,000 spectators and among the country's largest stadiums.
